Help Lou help others

Please take a short moment to help a very community-minded friend, Lou Monteleone, help others. Visit: http://social.macys.com/believe2009/#/tell-us-why-you-believe/339115.

Lou writes, "I recently submitted a short true story of an encounter I experienced with a little girl last year for Christmas. I would appreciate it if you could read my story and then give it a quick vote below. Feel free to spread the word and vote everyday if you could. If by chance the story should get the most votes, I would love to use the prize for some children less fortunate. If you could help I would really appreciate it. It’s a short read and won’t take much time.

Thank you,

Expert Offers Advice on How to Choose Age Appropriate and Safe Toys for Children During the Holidays

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center suggests parents consider their child’s age, interests, and skill levels when purchasing toys.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, parents can help prevent toy-related injuries by purchasing age appropriate toys such as the following:

Zero to one year-olds explore with their eyes, hands and mouth.

- Crib gyms
- Floor activity centers
- Activity quilts
- Squeaky toys
- Soft dolls or stuffed animals

One to three year-olds climb, jump, walk, throw and play rough and tumble games.

- Soft blocks
- Large blocks
- Push and pull toys
- Books
- Pounding and shaping toys

Three to five year-olds like to use their imagination and have toys that are close companions.

- Nontoxic art supplies
- Pretend toys (e.g. play money, telephone)
- Teddy bears or dolls
- Outdoor toys (e.g. tricycle and a helmet)

Five to nine year-olds like to be challenged with complex games that teach specific skills and concepts.

- Arts and craft kits
- Puppets
- Jump ropes
- Action figures
- Miniature dolls

Nine to 14 year-olds develop lifelong skills, hobbies and enjoy team and individual sports.

-Handheld electronic games
- Board games
- Sports equipment with protective gear
- Model kits
- Musical instruments

How I helped my 3 year old remember her address

My daughter is very intelligent (of course). It was fairly simple to teach her all the pertinent info she's supposed to know. But, along the way, she kept getting confused about her home address. It's really not developmentally appropriate for a 3 year old to understand the pieces that make up their address. Yet, they all need to know how to get home for safety purposes. Here's how we got her to learn it quickly.

We know how hearing things repetitively helps children remember. Once, I read a study that stated that children who were read to by their fathers displayed a richer vocabulary and higher reading abilities than those who weren't. So I got her father to record her pertinent information, including her address, onto a sound module. My daughter pressed the bear's belly over and over, of course, to hear the bear speak. Voila! Within no time, she could recite her address on command.

Bear My Heart greeting bears foster a sense of security for children, inspire creativity, promote the child play experience and help with language development. It grows with the child from a comfort piece to an educational tool. Our greeting bears are personalized, interactive, embellished, educational and create a bond between people who care about each other. Individuals design the bears themselves. These bears are personalized with special fabric on their shirts that can be personalized with a handwritten message or artwork by special markers included. A voice message can be recorded on a recordable sound module included. Each bear speaks in its designer's voice, displays their image or text message and is embellished with Swarovski crystals and glitter. Its trendy bows and unique colors make it fashion savvy.

This is not your average bear. For more information, visit http://www.bearmyheart.com/.

Comment from "Grateful" serving overseas

The following is a message from "Grateful" as commented on our Love Notes Page (http://www.bearmyheart.com/blog.html).
Hello Tammy,
I was sent to the middle east when my daughter was only a few months old and my wife and I were concerned that she would not know me when I returned. A friend told us about Bear My Heart so we decided to order a bear for her and put my voice on it. While I was gone my wife made sure she heard my voice throughout the day until I returned. When I came home I was prepared to rebuild a relationship with my little girl but as I entered the house she heard my voice, her head popped up and she came straight to my arms. It was all I could do not to completely break down. I wish you could truely feel how grateful I am to Bear My Heart for closing the distance between me and my little girl. May God spread his blessings on Bear My Heart.
Grateful 1/6
